Arts & Crafts Mission Style Lamps

Arts and crafts mission style lamps – most people don’t know this, but the original arts and crafts/mission style movement originated in India, where they incorporated Bungalow’s as a means of simple living.  Originally treated as summer homes during the 1900′s, mission style homes and decor became in demand from 1906 to 1925 – all starting in California.

By using natural materials such as mineral, wood and metals, arts and crafts mission style lighting has always been a great accent to most homes built  during that time.

If you have a vintage chest or bedside table, it would be a crime not to accompany it with a mission style pendant light or handmade arts and crafts table lamp.

For example, the handmade wooden lamp in the image above is a modern twist on a more classic design.  The workers and local craftsmen would use locally harvested goods to carve and sculpt furniture for their homes.

Create a Mission Style Room With Pendant Lighting

Creating the mission style of the late 19th century is quite the task in any home.  Aside from the architectural and interior design elements, such as protruding eaves and colonnade-style corridors, lighting also played a huge role in this movement.

In 2010, there’s no reason why you can’t take a modern home and give it some mission style decor.  This will bring a sense of warmth and texture through proper lighting and accessories.

For starters, the easiest way to mission-up any room is by adding a hanging mission style pendant light.  Typically used for general task areas, pendant lighting is perfect for kitchens and even over your night table to free up some surface space.

When hanging your mission or Tiffany style pendant light, you want to be sure that there is a clearance of between 30 to 40 inches above the surface.  Pendant lighting is great for showcasing furniture or decorative items and when combined with an antique Tiffany table lamp – your room will radiate with mission goodness!
